📍 About the Beach

Located in Unsan-ri, Byeonsan-myeon, Buan-gun (Jeonbuk State), Gosapo Beach boasts about 2 km of sandy shoreline — the largest beach in the area. Behind the beach runs a roughly 300 m stretch of pine forest, and the pairing of soft sand with the pine grove gives the beach its signature look. The water here is known for being clearer than at other West Sea beaches, and the sand is especially fine and soft. With comfortable water temperatures, it's a popular summer spot for families. The pine forest doubles as a well-loved camping area — on summer nights, it fills up with tents.

🐚 Haseom Island and the 'Modern-Day Miracle'

Just offshore sits a small island called Haseom. Its name comes from two possible origins: one character meaning "lotus" (as the island resembles a lotus floating on water), and another meaning "shrimp" (for its curled shape). The island belongs to the Won Buddhist foundation and is normally off-limits without prior permission. But around the full moon and new moon each lunar month, the tide pulls back to reveal a roughly 2 km sea path, letting visitors walk out to the island on foot. During this window, you can also try your hand at gathering clams, octopus, and sea cucumbers along the exposed seabed. Be sure to check the tide schedule before planning your visit.

🌇 Sunsets and Nearby Spots

Like most West Sea beaches, Gosapo is known for beautiful sunsets, and it pairs nicely with a stop at nearby Jeokbyeokgang for golden-hour views. The beach is also part of the Byeonsan Maeul-gil coastal walking trail (look for surprise lilies blooming along the trail in late August to early September, and it's a short trip from the quiet fishing harbour of Seongcheon-hang and the well-known Chaeseokgang cliffs.
