Snow Crab: A Delicate Taste from the Cold Sea

ree

Imagine a brisk ocean breeze and a fishing boat hauling up its shining catch — among them, the treasure of the sea: Snow Crab. With its snow-white flesh and sweet, delicate flavour, it’s no wonder this crab is a favourite among seafood lovers. Often referred to as "Dae-ge" in Korea, snow crab is gaining popularity not just for its taste, but also for being a more accessible luxury ingredient.

Caught mostly in the cold waters of the North Pacific — off the coasts of Canada, Alaska, and Russia — snow crab is known for its tender, flaky meat and relatively thin shell, which makes it easier to handle and enjoy at home. While it once belonged mainly to the fine-dining world, you can now find trimmed, ready-to-cook snow crab legs in grocery stores and Korean markets, bringing a touch of gourmet right into your kitchen. Why Snow Crab Is So Loved

There are a few reasons snow crab stands out: First of all. Soft, finely-textured meat. Unlike king crab, snow crab has a more delicate structure that melts in your mouth. Second, Sweet, clean flavour - Its natural taste doesn’t need fancy sauces or heavy seasoning. Next, Great value! It’s more affordable than king crab but still feels like a treat. Lastly, Super versatile: Whether you steam it, grill it, toss it in butter or soup — it holds up beautifully.

And because the meat fills out the legs right to the tips, you’re getting a satisfying portion with every bite. It’s a perfect seafood option for both casual meals and special occasions.

If you want to taste snow crab at its absolute best, steaming is the way to go. It’s simple, stress-free, and really lets the crab's natural flavour shine through — no heavy sauces or complicated prep needed. It’s the easiest way to enjoy snow crab, especially if you're cooking it at home for the first time.

You’ll need

  • 1–2 cleaned snow crabs

  • 1 cup of water

  • A few slices of green onion and garlic (to help with any fishy smell)

How to steam it?

  1. Rinse the crab under cold water and let it drain.

  2. Add water, green onion, and garlic to your steamer and bring to a boil.

  3. Place the crab in the steamer, cover, and steam for about 15 minutes.

  4. Once cooked, cut it into pieces and serve with a bit of dipping sauce (soy sauce + vinegar or melted butter).

✔️Tip: You can also use a microwave steamer for an even easier method — the crab still comes out tender and delicious!

With its melt-in-your-mouth texture, rich flavour, and affordable price point, snow crab is the perfect gateway to gourmet at home.
